Located in the southeastern corner of Missouri is the City of Bernie, a small community positioned in Stoddard County. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were almost 2,000 people living in Bernie in 2016. The city is named in honor of Bernice “Bernie” Crumb, the daughter of an original Bernie settler. In 1890, Bernie was laid out and since 1889 a post office has operated in the city.
